Do you struggle to communicate with your partner? Are you repeating negative patterns in relationships, and you just don’t know how to break them? You are not alone. A relationship is an investment. It requires time and effort and the more you put in, the more you will get back. Whether you are looking to repair a relationship or strengthen one, counselling can help you build the skills needed for a healthy, satisfying, long-lasting connection.

Relationship counselling is the process of counselling people in a relationship to try and understand and manage differences and repeating patterns of distress.

Some common reasons couples engage in relationship counselling include:

  • Communication break down
  • Money pressures
  • Sexual difficulties or sexual incompatibility
  • Infidelity
  • Imbalances in power
  • Difficulties maintaining trust
  • Living separate lives
  • Problems with extended family
  • Adjusting to parenthood
  • Conflicting ideas or concerns including child rearing, lifestyle, friends and finances

Often, relationship problems occur when the couple's communication has broken down, or, an event (such as an affair, the birth of a child, or when children leave home) has occurred which throws the relationship out of balance.

Couples counselling can help individuals to:

  • Understand the relationship they currently share
  • Rediscover why they were attracted in the first place
  • Find out what they now want from their relationship and from each other
  • Understand how they contributed to whatever their relationship has become
  • Discuss how they feel about each other now
  • Discuss what they are prepared to do to make this relationship work

A relationship counsellor can often act as a mediator and help to get to the foundation of a problem by allowing each person time to express their views and concerns in a supported environment in order to work towards a solution. The counsellor’s role is not to make judgements or make decisions for their clients; they are there to provide support to their clients in a mutual environment.

The practitioners at VCPS can provide relationship counselling which can include:

  • Teaching effective communication strategies
  • Helping each person understand the other’s needs
  • Teaching effective coping strategies
  • Practising conflict resolution and anger management strategies
