Hello, I’m Dr Russell Deighton
I’m a Clinical Psychologist with over 15 years of experience helping individuals navigate life’s emotional challenges and transitions. My work is grounded in the belief that therapy should be a compassionate, collaborative, and empowering space—somewhere you feel heard, supported, and gently guided toward change and growth.
I’ve worked in private practice for many years, both in Australia and internationally, and bring a depth of experience from clinical, academic, and cross-cultural contexts. My approach is integrative and tailored to your unique needs—drawing from emotion-focused therapy, third-wave cognitive behavioural therapies (like ACT and Schema Therapy), and narrative and constructivist frameworks. Whether you’re processing trauma, adjusting to loss, experiencing anxiety, or seeking clarity during a life transition, I offer a safe space where you can better understand yourself and move forward with strength and self-compassion.
In addition to my clinical work, I’m also an academic and senior lecturer, currently supervising research students at The Cairnmillar Institute. I have previously held academic positions in both Australia and Germany, including Head of the School of Counselling and Psychotherapy at Cairnmillar and lecturer in Medical Psychology at the University of Ulm, where I also worked in the University Clinic. I have published research and presented at conferences on topics such as self-conscious emotions (especially shame), trauma, somatisation, problem gambling, bullying, and cross-cultural mental health. This academic background enhances my clinical work, allowing me to integrate up-to-date research and evidence-based practice into therapy sessions.
How I Can Help
I work with adults who are facing a wide range of emotional, psychological, and interpersonal challenges. These include:
- Trauma, complex trauma, and post-traumatic stress
- Grief and loss
- Problem gambling and other addictive behaviours
- Anxiety, stress, and depression
- Relationship difficulties and emotional disconnection
- Life transitions, identity issues, and existential concerns
- Challenges around meaning, purpose, and change
In our work together, I aim to help you understand the emotional patterns that may be holding you back, and to support you in developing healthier, more adaptive ways of relating to yourself and others. My style is warm and thoughtful, with a focus on helping you make meaningful, lasting changes—not just surface-level symptom relief.
I provide face-to-face appointments at our East Melbourne clinic, as well as online consultations via telehealth, making it easy to connect no matter where you are in Australia.
Whether you’re going through a difficult time or simply want to deepen your self-awareness and emotional resilience, I would be glad to work with you.
If you have a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, Medicare may subsidise up to 10 sessions per calendar year.
